Student Opinions on Learning Through a Screen

The past month has been an eventful first quarter with learning how to socialize and interact online. With this quarter over half way through, we gathered ninth to eleventh graders’ thoughts on “How is your school year going?”

“Honestly online school is actually going well, I like having more time on assignments. I do miss [physically] learning and socializing with people.”[Now I have to]  socialize with my friends over messages or Instagram.

“The year has been good, it could be better, however. It is really nice getting to sleep in but I also hate how I can’t see any of my friends. I prefer learning in person and I can’t concentrate at home.”

“The hardest thing for me is having to sit in front of a screen from 8:30 to 2:30… I don’t get to see my friends or make new ones. It’s hard for me to unmute myself and not feel nervous. The way I have started asking questions is through email, but even then I feel like I am asking too many questions and are annoying the teacher.”

“It’s [been] pretty bad for a few reasons and one of them is the workload. I feel as if teachers are not properly comprehending the amount of time we have. Secondly, it’s a lot harder to actually learn anything. My eyes have been sore and getting worse, we attend our online classes but we also have to continue to do our work on our screens. On top of that, I need to get good grades because my junior year is pivotal.

I miss the act of going to school itself and just [enjoying] the high school experience. I definitely have less memories with my friends now that we don’t get to see each other. It’s time that we won’t be able to get back.”

“Starting the year off social distancing, while in our best interests has many complications. I feel that school has become much harder to do well in, while we may have everything at our disposal at home it is much easier to become distracted, or to lose motivation to do work and tests. While it would be great to start school off in person which we currently cannot do, we have to make the best of the situation and opportunity we have been given.”

“Honestly distance learning hasn’t affected me that much. It makes it easier to wake up in the morning. Also my interactions are more enjoyable now.”

“Personally I would prefer going to school in person but then I know it’s not safe and online school has it’s problems like not everyone has a stable connection and like we’re kind of just sitting here, not talking… [I]n person you can interact better and talk with your friends when you’re not supposed to but you can. So, how I see it right now, it’s kind of just like every other first year’s first year of school meeting new teachers, but then like right now I know most of the people in my classes…from middle school. …[I]t’s a lot different from a normal first year [because] it’s all online and you never have had the chance to have that like first beginning of the year “Hi, meet your classmates.”

“Online school is so hard to concentrate and my eyes get tired because I watch the computer all day long. Also, It is not an atmosphere where students all work together. When I send an email to the teacher to ask questions, I have to wait for a reply. I wish I could see my friends at school.”

“Starting high school like this was not what I expected, but it’s going well. I think being online is good, but I would rather be at the school because it’s more hands-on activities. Plus, I would just like to see my friends and hang out with them again.”

“I like it and I don’t, but I would rather be in person. I wish I could see my friends at school but I get more work done during online school.”

“Online school is really boring, I don’t have the motivation to wake up at all. Teachers don’t even make the work clear so I always have to email them. I’d rather actually be in school right now.”

“The good side about online school is that I can get more sleep, you know. You don’t have to wake up earlier to do things like get dressed and actually shower. But the bad side about it is that we have many distractions at home.”
