Born in Rogers, Texas on January 5, 1931, Alvin Ailey grew to be one of the most influential black figures in the history of modern dance. When he was 12, Ailey moved to Los Angeles, where his interest in dancing started. Paving the way for black dancers 15 years later, Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958. His efforts enhanced the roots of American modern dance, maintaining the cultural experiences of African-Americans to share with others.
