The Moanalua High School Girls Soccer Team completed their regular season play on Wednesday, January 8th. They played an away game against the McKinley Tigers and swept their opponents away with a total score of 12 to 0.
Although our Na Menehune team scored many points, it was not their sole focus of the game. Instead, they worked on improving the technical aspects.
Coach Nikki Dela Pena, who has been with Moanalua High School for 27 years, emphasized to the team the importance of working on control, especially in this, “lower momentum,” game. Throughout the first half, the team put up most of their goals. However, in the latter half, the team focused primarily on passing.
This game may have marked the end of the regular season, but it’s not the end of play for the Moanalua squad. As the playoff season begins, two key aspects for the team are “momentum and adrenaline.” Coach Pena believes that these will greatly help the team as they prepare for postseason play. She aims to, “keep practices fresh,” by changing the practices to allow the team to further grow and develop.
Moanalua is currently second in the OIA East with a record of 7-2. They may meet again with #1 Kaiser in the OIA Playoffs. The previous game was a close shut-out of 1-0 in favor of Kaiser. However, a rematch may not turn out the same way.
