Sophomore club founders Saige Chun and Olivia Shank both realized their love for fashion and decided to make a change and create a new club at Moanalua High School. After one meeting, their new club is already turning heads and they have begun planning big things for the exciting year ahead.
During summer, Chun and Shank admit to already planning their big ideas for fashion club and couldn’t wait to bring them to life.
“We were talking one day, and as a joke, [said] we should start a club and then we just kept sending each other ideas from instagram and stuff.” Chun explained.
It became real for them as soon as they signed the papers to officially become a club.
This club will give students a chance to express themselves through fashion by exploring style, sharing inspiration, and collaborating with others on creative projects throughout the school year.
“I just want people to not be scared to experiment,” Shank explains. “Experimenting is the best thing, even if it’s the worst thing you’ve ever worn, you still tried and you’re finding your own style.”
Their plans for the future of their club are exciting, with their plans of upcycling and holding a thrift night where everyone brings clothing they want to trade so each person can share their own fashion sense.
Fashion teacher and fashion club advisor Mr. Makekau developed his love for fashion back in seventh grade. “When I attended a new school, I noticed these kids bullying another student because of his clothes,” he said. “I didn’t want to be bullied, so I remember telling my mom I wanted to go shopping. I didn’t want those kinds of clothes, I wanted certain clothes so I wouldn’t get bullied. From then on, I’ve always been looking at fashion trends and staying on top of them.”
He has always loved clothes and his passion for fashion was influenced by his mother. His mother was also a seamstress, sewing clothes and making clothes for him too. Before becoming a teacher, he worked as a sportswear designer, designing surfwear for local businesses.
Makekau hopes that through this club, students will develop the same love for fashion that has shaped his life and continue to express themselves confidently through style. The fashion club is ready to welcome anyone with a passion for fashion because school is always better when you feel and look your best.
