Have you heard of the Blood Bank? What about the Food Drive? Or even the Fall Fest? You may overlook the people behind these fundraisers. Look no further than Leo Club, here at Moanalua High School since 1977. Receiving awards since 1990, this club focuses on community service activities and developing the qualities of Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity (L.E.O.) in its members.
In one of their current projects, the club members, nicknamed the ‘Leos’, are signing up to do a variety of duties at the 39th Annual Celebration of Youth Event (AFY) Fundraiser Gala on Saturday, November 29, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:30/10:00 p.m. at ‘Alohilani, located at 2490 Kalakaua Ave.
Leo Club allows members to sign up for what they can participate in, meaning that members aren’t obligated, or won’t be able to participate in every project Leo Club has. Lauren Rubillos, a Junior and a new member of the Leo Club, speaks about how attire can vary from project to project.
“Normally, we’d wear our Leo Club shirts at these projects. But this one [AFY Fundraiser Gala project] is so fancy. We have to wear black. Collars for the boys, dresses or blouses for the girls.”
Not all projects involve demanding hours. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Moanalua High School from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., is the MoHS campus beautification project that focuses on repainting the railings.
Participating in high school extracurricular activities can improve college chances. Additionally, participation in Leo Club can potentially grant members a $2,000 scholarship, as well as an enhancement in sharpened leadership and life skills.
Leos, with the support of Lions Club International Foundation, can make an impact in the community while gaining character along the way. Leo Club has a total of 230 members and counting at Moanalua High School. Currently, Ms. Deliz, the Leo Club advisor at MoHS, accepts applications from anyone who has completed the application process.
