Return Of The Student Athletes

Adrianne Salas, Staff Writer

After 365 days and counting since all sports have been cancelled, student athletes are finally returning. While seasons are limited, conditioning has began for the following sports

  • Football
  • Soccer
  • Track
  • Volleyball
  • Golf
  • Baseball
  • Tennis
  • Softball
  • Judo

MoHs golfing team has recently had their first tournament on March 29th where they (Ashley Koga and Ben Luafalealo) tied for third.

Among other student athletes, football player Chad Owens says, “I’m just happy to see most sports back practicing and having that team feeling again.”

According to Cynthia Shimoda, Moanalua High School athletic trainer, “Per DOE guidelines, all sports will be socially distanced, conditioning with 10 person max “ohana pods”.  They do have to wear their face coverings at all times.”

While working through the pandemic and following the HIDOE guidelines, some coaches are splitting athletes up by grade, hosting zoom sessions, or keeping practices limited.

Unfortunately for sports like water polo, their season/conditioning will not resume due to lack of facilities because of covid.

Many sports have upcoming tournaments, matches and games since we have reached tier 3 which means you can be sure to keep an eye out for athletes this spring season.
