The Moanalua judo team is heading to the State Tournament with much to celebrate about this past season.

Both girls and boys teams won the OIA team title, against Waipahu and Kapolei respectively, on Friday, April 8 in the OIA team championships. In the OIA Individual Judo Championships on Saturday, April 23, more than 20 judokas qualified individually within their respective weight brackets for States, with 11 judokas placing first.

This comes after two years of having no season due to COVID-19. Before quarantine, both girls and boys clinched the team state title twice in a row for the 2018 and 2019 season.

“I really hope that we get the team title. As much as a state championship is worth for senior year, I think the most important thing is team title, because I feel if we win as a team, for upcoming generations, they’ll see, ‘I’ll join judo too’, and it’s just going to keep on going,” senior Rachel Oshita said. She placed first in her weight class of 129lb.

The state tournament is the last event of the 2022 season. It will be held on Saturday, May 7 at Stan Sherrif Center, starting at 10:30am.
