Na Menehune girls varsity “Blue” is sitting at the No. 2 position of the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) rankings at 5-0 halfway through the season. Kalaheo, the team’s opponent on Oct. 5, is 6-0.
After an uneven start in pre-season tournament play, the girls started to come together more and have won all but one of their matches in straight sets. Only the Sept. 26 Kahuku game went to four sets.
“Most of the season has gone as expected,” Head Coach Alan Cabanting said. “We have started our season well, but there are areas where we need more work.”
He cites the setter-hitter connection as one area that can get stronger with increased experience.
“We need more reps with each other to get the timing and communication better,” he said.
With increased experience playing with each other as well as against other schools, Cabanting expects the team will becoming more assertive in their play and “have muscle memory take over.”
