On this day 279 AD, Saint Valentine was put to dea

On this day 279 AD, Saint Valentine was put to death, marking the beginning of Valentine’s Day.

Through the rule of Claudius the Cruel, The Roman Republic was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns across the European Continent.

The Emperor was tasked to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his ranks. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to enlist because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome.
Saint Valentine, who realized the injustice of the new law, deified Claudius and continued to marry young lovers in secret.

When the Romans found out about Valentine's act, he was sentenced to death by word of the Prefect of Rome. Condemned to be beaten to death and to have his head cut off, the sentence was carried out on February 14.

Through time and legend, it is told that whilst imprisoned, the jailer's daughter would serve Valentine’s dinner. During their time together, it is said that she and Valentine had fallen in love. On the eve of his execution he wrote a love letter signed, “Your Valentine.”

On the evening of January 11th, the spirits were high as the Nā Menehune Boys soccer team faced the Roosevelt Rough Riders for their senior night.

“Entering our senior night game we all were really enthusiastic. We knew that this game would be our night to celebrate the team and put on a good show for our family and friends,” senior Ethan Zuniga said.

On this day, January 22, 1968, Hawaiian legend Duk

On this day, January 22, 1968, Hawaiian legend Duke Kahanamoku passed away at age 77.

The native Hawaiian competitive swimmer who had popularized the surfing sport was also known as the surfing ambassador to the world. He was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming, winning Gold in 1912, 1920 and 1924.

Duke brought his surfing to California, New Zealand, Australia and so forth to demonstrate his ability on his homemade surfboard.

Around 1925, while working as an actor in Hollywood, Duke sped to the rescue after a boat capsized in Laguna Beach. He made 3 trips with his surfboard to safely ferry its passengers.

Throughout his life, Kahanamoku served as the Honolulu sheriff for nearly 30 years. Later, he became the city’s official greeter for tourists, teaching the customs and welcoming them to the islands.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is celebrated by people of Chinese ancestry. 2023 is the year of the Rabbit. The start of every Lunar New Year promises prosperity and health.

The year of the rabbit mostly focuses on a person’s health such as taking care of oneself, even if you think you’re healthy. Actions you can do to help your health during this year include remembering to take your medicine, going on a diet, exercising, working on your stress management, going to sleep at a good hour, and having a healthier mindset.
